Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Small Focus Group Discussion (SFGD) approach on eighth-grade students understanding of descriptive texts. The subjects in this study were 30 eighth grade students. The sample consisted of a single class comprising 30 students. Data were obtained through the administration of pre-tests and post-tests to assess students' performance before and after the treatment. This research employed a pre-experimental design, specifically the one-group pretest-posttest model. According to the normality test results presented in Table 4.5, the Shapiro-Wilk test yielded a significant value of 0.053 for the pre-test data, which indicates that 0.053 > 0.05. This suggests that the pre-test data follows a normal distribution. The post-test data showed a value of 0.057, which means 0.057 > 0.05, thus confirming that the post-test data is also normally distributed. Based on the paired sample t-test, the significance level (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000, which indicates that the null hypothesis (H₀) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ) is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the SFGD method has a significant effect on the descriptive text comprehension of eighth-grade students at SMPN 11 Tanjungpinang. This SFGD method enables students to help one another, foster a spirit of learning and exploration, explain the meaning of words or sentences, and collaborate to build understanding.
