Abstract

This study aimed to analyze students’ speaking difficulties among ninth grade students at SMPN 6 Tanjungpinang using a qualitative descriptive design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 20 students and analyzed thematically.The findings revealed three major factors affecting students’ speaking difficulties: linguistic, psychological, and classroom-related factors. Linguistic factors included vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and fluency. Psychological factors involved fear of making mistakes, lack of confidence, and speaking anxiety, while classroom factors included peer pressure, teacher feedback, and students’ self perception.The results showed that vocabulary limitations and speaking anxiety were the main obstacles. Therefore, supportive classroom environments and constructive feedback are recommended to improve students’ speaking ability.
