Abstract

This research aims to examine the effect of using puppetry on the speaking skills of Pre-Elementary 1 students at Afford International English Course Tanjungpinang. The method used was a quasi-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test. A total of 20 students were assessed before and after receiving treatment through four puppet-based learning sessions. The instruments used in this study included a speaking test scored using a rubric evaluating vocabulary, grammar, and fluency. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ speaking performance. Students' scores increased in terms of classification, with most moving from "Poor" or "Average" levels before the treatment to "Good" or "Excellent" after the treatment. Statistical analysis using the paired sample t-test showed a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05), confirming that the use of puppetry had a significant effect. Based on these findings, puppetry proved to be an effective tool for enhancing the speaking abilities of young language learners.
