Abstract

This study investigated English teachers’ creativities in contextual teaching practices at vocational high schools. A qualitative descriptive was employed involving two English teachers from SMK Harapan Utama and SMK Eben Haezer in Batam City. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis, and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis. The findings revealed three major themes. First, teachers demonstrated creativity through flexible lesson planning, material adaptation, differentiated instruction, technology integration, and interactive learning activities. Second, teachers connected English learning with vocational majors through vocational vocabulary integration, major-based material selection, workplace communication activities, authentic learning tasks, and real-world contextualization. Third, teachers faced challenges related to curriculum and time constraints, diverse student proficiency levels, limited learning resources, and material development. The study concludes that teachers’ creativities play an important role in supporting contextual teaching practices and making English learning more meaningful, relevant, and beneficial for vocational students’ future careers.
