Abstract
Speaking is one of the most important aspects of English, especially for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Students often still struggle and lack confidence when speaking English. Therefore, English presentations are frequently used in speaking classes to improve students’ speaking skills. This study aimed to explore students’ perceptions using English presentation in developing their speaking skills. This study employed a qualitative research method. The participants in this study were twelve sixth-semester English Education students at Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis. The results of this study revealed four main themes. First, presentations improve students' speaking skills through vocabulary and pronunciation improvement. Second, presentations increase students' confidence by reduced nervousness and increased confidence in speaking. Third, feedback and learning media support students' speaking skills along with lecturer and peer feedback and learning media support. Finally, students face challenges when presenting including fear of making mistakes, fear of being judged, and limited vocabulary. Overall, despite some difficulties students face when speaking English, they have a positive perception of the use of English in presentations. Students believe that presentations provide opportunities to improve speaking skills and build self-confidence.
