Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the reading skills of the eighth-grade students in comprehending recount texts at SMP Negeri 17 Bintan. This study employed a descriptive quantitative research design involving 30 students of Class VIII A selected through purposive sampling. The data were collected using a reading test consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions covering five reading skill indicators: main idea, specific information, reference, inference, and vocabulary. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics with IBM SPSS Statistics version 22. The findings showed that the students obtained a mean score of 97.50, with a minimum score of 60 and a maximum score of 100. A total of 28 students (93.3%) were categorized as Very Good, one student (3.3%) as Good, and one student (3.3%) as Fair. The main idea indicator achieved the highest percentage (99.17%), while reference and vocabulary obtained the lowest percentage (95.83%). Overall, the findings indicate that the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 17 Bintan demonstrated Very Good reading skills in comprehending recount texts.
