Abstract

This research was conducted to improve students’ writing skills in descriptive texts by using short movies as a teaching medium at SMP N 11 Tanjung Pinang. The study used a Classroom Action Research (CAR) method based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model (1988), involving one cycle with three meetings. The participants were 29 seventh-grade students. Data were collected through pre-tests, post-tests, and observation checklists. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ writing skill after the implementation of short movie-based learning. The average pre-test score was 62, with only 41.38% of students achieving the minimum standard, while the post-test average rose to 73.93 with 82.76% of students achieving success. The short movies helped students generate ideas, improve vocabulary, and construct better-organized descriptive texts. This finding shows that short films are learning media that can improve students' descriptive text writing skills.
