Abstract

Writing is not just making one sentence or just a few unrelated things, but producing a series of organized things, which are related to one another and in a certain style. The problems in writing as follows: lack of constructing of English grammar and vocabulary, not able to organize ideas and paragraph, low confidence in writing, and feel unsure of their abilities in English writing. According to the teacher, the students of grade seventh students at SMPN 11 Tanjungpinang may feel unsure of their ability to write English, so they easily give up and are not motivated to learn. This study aims to improve learners' English writing skills through the collaborative writing technique, to increase students’ confidence in writing descriptive text in English, and to contribute knowledge about the effectiveness of the collaborative learning in improving the English writing skill. This research utilizes the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method which consists of four stages, namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. Before the application of the Collaborative Writing Technique only 15 Students passed taker exam. After conducting the Post-Test, it can be seen that the result of writing descriptive texts of students who get a score of 70 or above is 29 students. And based on observation checklist as well students have improved. Students can stay on task, listen to the ideas of their group, participate in discussions, encourage their members, and exhibits positive attitude.
