Abstract

This study aims to analyse the quality of reading materials in English textbooks for junior high school grade VII . This research is expected to provide valuable information for teachers in choosing the right textbooks to improve students' reading skills. This study evaluated the five main criteria of good reading activities developed by Culce Murcia and Melawati & Hamied. The subject of this study is the entire content of the English textbook "English For Nusantara".The method used is content analysis with a qualitative descriptive approach.The data were taken and collected from the PDF book.The instruments in this study were observation checklists and interviews.The checklists were adapted from the criteria of good reading material developed by Celce Murcia and Melawati & Hamied.The book fulfils (1) Clear and good quality of content, (2) Language use (vocabulary and grammar), (3) Interesting and informative activities, (4) Response to user needs, and (5) Conformity with learning objectives in Merdeka Curriculum. The analysis results show that the textbook meets the criteria with an average percentage of 83.92%, which is categorised as ‘Good’ based on the five criteria proposed by Celce Murcia and Melawati & Hamied.
